RESOURCES
1. BECTU – project to collect oral histories from filmmakers interested in expanding its coverage of women filmmakers – needs volunteers. BECTU will provide equipment and guidelines. It runs training mornings. Interviews are lodged on its database and subject to permission (because some contain sensitive commentary!) made available through the BFI Library. NB Since then Laraine Porter has had a meeting between DeMonfort and BECTU in which interest in and support was expressed for WFHN.
2. Media Archives of Central England – MACE – lodged at University of Leicester and directed by James Patterson offer a good source of amateur and TV material.
DATABASE ISSUES
1. Collaboration with Screenonline and BFI Mediatechs needs investigating. Contact Mark Duguid who is now responsible for the NFTVA’s ‘Archive On-line’ project.
2. Possible problem of a database centring on individuals - suggested that a web-magazine format might open up contextual issues and questions.
3. Clare Watson suggested (and undertook to develop) a quarterly or half-yearly Network Newsletter, listing new materials and events past and future to support and expand the wider Network.
4. WFHN Database or Hub or Gateway needs a host: Wiftv? Women’s Library? BFI Screenonline? University of Westminster’s ‘Arts on Film Archive’ supported by the School of Media, Art and Design (Harrow campus)?
EXPANDING BASE OF RESEARCHERS
1. DeMonfort University –Steve Chibnall suggested graduates could be interested in developing research in women’s sound history, with support from him and Laraine Porter who lectures there.
2. Wikipedia was cited as an example of the democratizing and expansion of knowledge through a wider community beyond academia. If the Network website or wiki develops in this way we need an editorial board to keep check on entries, to eliminate misinformation.
PUBLICITY AND FUNDRAISING
1. Suggested we need a patron to head campaign for funds to cover database fees and public events: e.g. Helen Mirren? (Birds Eye View (BEV) have Joanna Lumley!)
2. Network should develop a How to get funding kit.
